It’s a simple idea: remove the fuel, reduce the fire risk.

That’s why so many of Fire Aside’s partners take advantage of our ChipperDay program to make community vegetation removal easier and more efficient. Regardless of what your community calls it — “green waste” or “slash” or “chipping” — we are all doing the same thing, taking large unwanted vegetation and efficiently removing it away from homes.

ChipperDay is an online software solution that makes fuel removal at scale possible in an entirely new and flexible way based on your local program’s design and needs. Once implemented, local residents simply pull up an easy-to-use online form and book their reservation. At time of reservation based on customizable program settings the resident can select pickup options.

Local fire officials everywhere are always looking for ways to increase defensible space and reduce wildfire risk. Encouraging local residents to remove large fuels on their property is an easy way to do that — ChipperDay supports that mission. There’s a direct economic benefit, too : according to the Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority in northern California, for every $100 spent on this program, residents spent $120 to pay for mitigation efforts.

Currently, agencies ranging from the Prescott Fire Department (Arizona) to Aspen Fire (Colorado) to Berkeley Fire (California), among many others, use ChipperDay.

So far this year, ChipperDay has powered over 5,000 pickups, and facilitated the removal of over 86,000 cubic yards of vegetation nationwide. Put another way, that’s roughly 7,200 dump truck’s worth of waste!

Our partners find Fire Aside’s platform to be critical in getting individual property owners to do their part. According to a 2024 survey by the MWPA, over 88% of respondents said that the local free chipping program directly led to removal of high risk fuel around their homes.

“It’s a really useful and helpful service that definitely encourages us to clear the vegetation,” one San Anselmo, Calif. resident wrote. “Thanks!”
